Running an online business is much better than opening a store. You can employ less people. You can sell your products 24/7. You don’t really need to have in-stock products. You don’t have to dress up every day. You only need to pay the domain and hosting fee that is much cheaper than leasing a space in malls, and many more. Besides, creating an online store can be done by everybody. Here, I want to share my tips and steps in selling chocolate online.What are the basic requirements to start an online business?To attract customers and get their trusts, we should have our own domain name. It’s really not recommended to sell your products using blogspot.com or WordPress.com. Act as professional by spending around per year to pay your domain name. The domain name should represent your business.After having a domain name, you should choose a good hosting that its uptime nearly 100% so your business or store can open 24/7 on the internet. To buy a good hosting, you can read its reviews on the internet. If you don’t want to spend extra money for hosting, you can use the free hosting given by Blogspot or WordPress. But, don’t expect that you’re free to do anything in your hosting, there are many limitations.What should exist on the site?First, I categorize my products, like: Easter Chocolate, Christmas Chocolate, Praline Chocolate, Birthday Chocolate, etc. These categories help visitors in finding the right product. Next, in each category, I put some pictures of each product and write short descriptions about it. When there’s a promo or sale, I mark it too.Putting your product’s price is very important because price is one of the main considerations before people buy any products. Don’t expect them to contact you about the prices. It’s good if they want to send you an email, but at the time they get your reply, they might have bought the product from another seller. Like real stores, we should be open about our products and prices, so customers can easily compare to similar products in different online stores.Encourage them to send a ‘Contact Us’ message if they’re going to order in mass or have special request. It shows that you treat potential customers specially and gives you additional point compared to your competitors.To build an e-commerce site, you can use E-commerce Plugin in WordPress, but I strongly recommend you to use Prestashop. It’s free and easy to use for creating a fabulous online store. What technique should I use to market the products?To sell your products, you need to do it both online and offline. For the offline way, if your real store is well-known, you can put your site address in bags, packages, name cards, etc. You can also advertise about your new sites on the newspaper, radio, and/or television. To attract them to buy your products online, you can give them 25% off for buying it online.For the online method, your site should implement Search Engine Optimization (SEO). It’s very important to appear on the first page of search engine result page (SERP) so internet users can find your site easily. It’s similar to lease a place in a strategic location, such as in malls.Is there anything else that you need to do?Yes. Your job doesn’t stop there. You have to be creative in selling your products, especially in seasonal events, such as: Christmas, Easter, Mother’s Day, etc. Besides, you should also know the demands of your market. Never sell the products if there’s no market at all.Let me give you an example: the online store that I opened is targeted for Indonesians in which they don’t send chocolate during Easter Day. It’s different from what happens in other countries. Although I already gave a big discount for Easter and launched special products, the sales weren’t too good. In contrast, during Lebaran or Idul Fitri Day, I could sell chocolates in quite big amount.Another thing that you should keep in mind is to update your site continuously. When you create new products, you should put it on your site too. For me, I created a blog to write special request from certain customers to give inspirations to other readers. Believe it or not, many customers are more attracted in making their chocolate gift personal by following the examples I wrote on blog.Keep in mind about those 4 things when you have an online store. Also, don’t forget to allocate time to do comparative study about your competitor’s products and prices.
