You probably already know precisely what every single thing in your medicine box should be used to cure. You know that if your stomach hurts, you should take an antacid. You know that when you have an allergic reaction you must take an antihistamine. You are aware that a headache requires ibuprofen or acetaminophen. But did you know that the medications in your medicine cabinet can be used to cure all sorts of other problems too? Consider these uncommon cures for ordinary household problems.

You probably already know that an antacid like Alka-Seltzer (and other antacids) can truly help you feel better when you have belly troubles or reflux. Did you know, though, that your Alka Seltzer or other antacid may be used to ease the sting of insect bites? This is because virtually all antacids like Alka Seltzer contain aspirin which helps ease the pain and stinging you feel when you are bitten. Make a paste from a smashed up antacid tablet, a small amount of oatmeal and a little bit of water. Spread it out over the affective area and you will find that it stops hurting almost immediately. This typically works better than those products that are created for the same purpose, like calamine lotion.

It’s common knowledge that mouthwash helps cure halitosis but did you know you can use it to fight athlete’s foot too? Alcohol based mouthwashes are really good in keeping your toes and feet clean and in good health. To use this cure for athlete’s foot, soak a cotton ball in your alcohol based mouthwash and then rub the cotton ball over the soles of your feet and between your toes after every shower. The alcohol kills any impending fungal infections that may be building up.

Baking soda has been used for years for teeth cleaning. It is great as an at-home tooth whitener and is good for an oral scrub. Did you know, however, that you can use it to treat conditions like sunburns as well? The properties contained in baking soda are able to neutralize the pH balance in your skin. To get as much relief as is possible, pour a cup of baking soda into your bath water–under the running water tap, wait for it to entirely dissolve and then climb in and soak for 30 minutes.

You know that aloe vera is wonderful for dealing with skin burns. Aloe vera will soothe your skin also and reduce the pain caused by burns–no matter how severe. But did you know that aloe vera can help cure canker sores also? The same properties in aloe vera that help your skin feel better can help get rid of your canker sores. Research has established that those who treat canker sores with aloe vera heal as much as 50% more quickly than people who use traditional canker sore cures.

These are only a few of the uncommon ways you can apply very common remedies. Instead of running out to spend money on the latest over-the-counter remedy for your problem, why not try something that you already have at home? You have all kinds of cures in your medicine cabinet that do more than what they are created for, why not get the most for your money?
