On June 1st, 2011, with the help of his social media adviser Amy Jo Martin aka “SHAQ’s New Kobe Bryant”, legendary NBA center Shaquille O’Neal combined the micro-vlogging site Tout along with Twitter to retire from the NBA. Put simply, within little time, the experiment (fueled by the retweets of Twitter users – including celebrities such as Justin Bieber) reached tens of millions of fans and frustrated TV networks who were shocked that SHAQ didn’t need the help of traditional news media to deliver his announcement. The results proved that by HUMANIZING your brand (connecting with your fans) via leveraging the correct use of simple social media tools (as opposed to pushing your product or image through old-school advertising) has become a powerful way to create your very own “media network”.
