A Sketch-Based System for Highway Design

To create traffic simulations of high visual-fidelity, roads needs to be designed and modelled in great detail to conform to the governing rules and regulations of highway design. Each road could be created manually, but this can become a time-consuming and laborious process when modelling large-scale and complex networks. Therefore, automated techniques for generating roads efficiently and effectively, without any prior user knowledge of road design principles and practices, is highly desirable in both urban-planning and entertainment industries. This video demonstrates our novel sketch-based system for highway design. To generate a road in our application, the user sketches a path onto a three-dimensional terrain and the system generates a realistic road, guided by the input sketch and a combination of prioritised constraints, including road curvature, road inclination, and the volume of ground that would be displaced during its construction. This intuitive tool enables users to rapidly design, create and visualise realistic road networks across both flat and undulating terrains.
